Jeep tour in Tusheti covers three from four valleys of Tusheti: Chagma, Pirikiti and Gometsari with it’s picturesque views. Located on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, Tusheti is bordered by the Russian republics of Chechnya and Dagestan to the north and east, respectively; and by the Georgian historic provinces Kakheti and Pshav-Khevsureti to the south and west, respectively. The population of the area is mainly ethnic Georgians called Tushs or Tushetians. Historically, Tusheti comprised four mountain communities: the Tsova (living in the Tsova Gorge), the Gometsari (living along the banks of the Tushetis Alazani River), the Pirikiti (living along the banks of the Pirikitis Alazani River) and the Chaghma, living close to the confluence of the two rivers). Administratively speaking, Tusheti is now part of the municipality of Akhmeta, itself part of Georgia’s eastern region of Kakheti. The largest village in Tusheti is Omalo.

We chose Highlander Travels for our visit to Tusheti. Rusudan of Highlander Travel designated Gela as driver and Natalia as English speaking guide and interpreter to take us there. Both were excellent, attentive to all our needs and very concerned that we should go back with fond memories. Omalo was where we were booked to stay in for two nights and the two of us were required to share a room. Unfortunately the room was so tiny that it was impossible for two people to occupy it at the same time. We therefore took two separate rooms and had to pay extra - about 90 GEL per day for the extra room. I think Highlander Travel should bring facts like accommodation to the notice of clients before organizing trips so that tourists know what they are in for. This however did not diminish the overall experience which was memorable at the very least - the food at Omalo, the experience with Gela and Natalia, who performed their tasks to perfection. Less
